Joan Kagezi Murder: UPDF deserter Daniel Kisekka jailed for 35 years
The International Crimes Division of the High Court has convicted UPDF deserter Daniel Kisekka Kiwanuka, a charcoal burner and peasant from Nsavu village in Kayunga, for the 2015 murder of Assistant DPP Joan Kagezi Namazzi. The development follows a plea bargain deal Kisekka struck with the Office of the DPP, in which he agreed to plead guilty to murder charges in exchange for a lenient sentence. As part of the deal, the prosecution dropped terrorism charges against Kisekka and amended the indictment to reflect his plea of guilt to the murder charge. In return, the High Court has sentenced him to 35 years in prison. However, he will serve 34 years, taking into account the one year he has already spent on remand.
