PANORAMA: A peak inside Kampala’s garbage politics stench
Nearly four months after the overfilled Kiteezi landfill spilled beyond its buffer zone, killing 34 people, injuring 21, and displacing 280 others, the executive acted hastily to placate the public. This led to the sacking and condemnation to the court of three top KCCA executives who had supervisory and technical oversight over the dump site. In the nick of time, there were also discussions on waste management around the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, which comprises Kampala, Wakiso, Entebbe, and Mukono. The discussions have seemingly died down or been mired in the alphabet of bureaucratic order, and those in charge have gone back to slumber until another tragedy strikes.
