The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has revealed that the country loses over Shs 20 billion annually due to illegal electricity connections.

According to UEDCL, these illegal connections are most rampant in the Kampala metropolitan area, often carried out during late-night hours, and continue to hinder national development.

In response, the company has launched the “Wetereze” campaign, an initiative offering amnesty to individuals and households currently using electricity illegally, giving them a chance to regularize their connections without facing penalties.

Paul Mwesigwa, Managing Director of UEDCL, stated that the utility has already received over 6,000 applications under the campaign. However, he emphasized that the amnesty period will not extend beyond 30th September.

Operations to crack down on illegal connections will resume on 1st October, targeting those who fail to comply.
