Health officials in Lwengo District are urging the Ministry of Health to regulate Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) due to their involvement in rising maternal deaths caused by postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). The concern was raised during a campaign to raise awareness about maternal mortality. According to the Ministry’s 2024 report, haemorrhage accounted for 43% of maternal deaths, many of which occurred under the care of unregulated TBAs. In Lwengo, only 17% of pregnant women seek timely medical help, leaving the majority at risk. Local leaders noted previous failed attempts to control TBAs due to political resistance.
