On Thursday, police arrested Issa Ssekitto, the acting Chairperson of the Kampala City Traders’ Association (KACITA), as he chaired a meeting with traders in downtown Kampala who were still protesting against the increase in rental charges and the controversial weight tax system on textiles and garments, among other longstanding issues.

Some sources suggest that Ssekitto was arrested for inciting violence within the trader community, but police have not yet formally communicated the details of his arrest. Unlike yesterday, when most shops in the Central Business District (CBD) were closed, business has partially resumed today amidst foot and vehicle patrols by security personnel.
