Uganda is moving away from an era dominated by imports, as foreign investors heed the government’s call to produce locally under the Buy Uganda, Build Uganda (BUBU) policy. During a visit to a state-of-the-art exhibition centre set to be unveiled this weekend for Ugandans looking to explore business opportunities, Investment State Minister Evelyn Anite highlighted how power solutions firm Chint, once dependent on imported finished goods, is now manufacturing prepaid meters, cables, and soon LED lights right here in Kampala. This transition, driven by government incentives and subsidies, is creating jobs, cutting the import bill, and setting Uganda on a path to greater access to East African export markets.
