Besigye faces charges of unlawful possession of firearms in court martial
Opposition politician and former four-time presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye, and his colleague, Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya, have returned to the General Court Martial in Makindye to receive a ruling on the legality of the charges that were slapped on them last month. The two are facing charges related to security and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition involving two pistols.
Besigye and Kamulegeya, the two accused in this case, say they are before the wrong court, being civilians and having allegedly committed the offence in foreign countries—Nairobi, Kenya; Athens, Greece; and Geneva, Switzerland. They want the charge sheet to be struck out for being incurably defective and argue that they should be discharged from what they describe as illegal prison detention.
The ongoing court session is attended by Dr. Kizza Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, a number of prominent lawyers, and Besigye’s supporters from the People's Front for Freedom. Some of Besigye's lawyers were earlier blocked from accessing court, which led the court to adjourn twice.
