PM Nabbanja launches $20m vessel on lake Victoria
Today marked a historic moment for East African trade and transport, Lake Victoria’s first scheduled roll-on/roll-off freight vessel, the MV Mpungu, has officially set sail. The groundbreaking vessel promises to slash journey times, ease road congestion, and support sustainable economic growth across the region. Commissioned today at Port Bell, the M.V. Mpungu is set to revolutionize freight transport between Uganda and Tanzania, cutting travel time from days to just 18 hours. The vessel, operated by Grindrod Logistics Africa - Uganda, can carry up to 1,000 tonnes of freight per crossing, providing businesses with a safer, cost-effective, and low-emission alternative to congested road transport.
