Stakeholders reject Marriage Bill proposal
Various stakeholders have rejected a proposal in the Marriage Bill 2024 criminalizing cohabitation, urging Parliament to enact a law that will make marriage more attractive rather than destabilizing families. This came after the joint committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and the Gender Committee engaged with officials from various NGOs and students from the Makerere University Law Council. Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee stated that they would not rush to pass the bill, revealing that over 10 groups have been engaged, with many more expected.
