UPDF soldier remanded for possessing endangered species
The Makindye Military Barracks legal officers have today handed over Yasin Jerwa, a serving UPDF soldier who had jumped bail since November 2023, following his arrest. After jumping bail, Jerwa’s cousin Michael Kolulye, who had stood surety for him, has been on remand for more than a month. This was after the army refused to hand over Jerwa, who had been on guard duty, on behalf of the army’s retired general. Today, Jerwa was presented to Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu and was remanded to Luzira after pleading guilty to charges of having a pangolin, which is an endangered species. The maximum sentence upon conviction is life in prison or a fine of 200 million shillings. Sudhir Byaruhanga has more in this report.
