Health Ministry recruits 152 community health workers
Nearly two decades, Uganda’s healthcare system has relied on Village Health Teams (VHTs) volunteers, who serve as the first point of contact for healthcare at the community level, but with a growing population and increasing health demands, gaps in service delivery have become evident.
Now, the government has taken a bold step to address this by introducing Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) trained personnel set to reinforce primary healthcare at the parish level. But even as 152 new recruits they prepare to take on their roles, concerns remain about how they will fit into Uganda’s healthcare structure.
