ASSHU asks ministry of education to address teacher transfers and understaffing
The Association of Secondary School Headteachers of Uganda (ASSHU) is calling on the Ministry of Education to address delays in granting transfers to teachers, as well as the issue of understaffing, particularly in government secondary schools. The Association’s President, Deborah Basekanakyo, who is also the headteacher at Wanyange Girls SS, stated that these two issues have contributed to poor learning outcomes in government secondary schools. In response, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Sports, Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, noted that the ministry is working towards bridging the staffing gaps. A voluntary transfer occurs when a teacher opts to transfer to a vacancy that would otherwise be filled through a compulsory transfer.
