Low numbers of female inmates pursuing education amidst challenges
The number of female inmates pursuing education while serving their sentences remains very low. In 2024, only one female inmate sat for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), while out of 27 inmates who sat for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations, only one was female. Joweria Kaweesi, the sole female inmate who took the 2024 UCE exams, shared her story of resilience and determination, highlighting the challenges that prevent many female inmates from pursuing education while incarcerated.
