Minister warns schools over extra fees, highlights teacher pay gap
The Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Betty Amongi, has cautioned administrators of government-aided schools against charging fees beyond what the capitation grant covers, warning that those who do so risk facing prosecution. Speaking at the launch of the 2024 Equal Opportunities Commission annual report, Amongi emphasized that such practices contradict the principle of free education in government schools, effectively blocking some children from accessing education. The report also draws attention to the disparities created by the recent salary increment for science teachers, an issue that has caused discontent among art teachers, who feel marginalized. As Walter Mwesigye reports, the commission’s findings call for a balanced approach to teacher remuneration to ensure fair treatment and maintain harmony in the education sector.
