UPDF defends Lt Gen Elwelu amid US sanctions
The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces has defended former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, now a senior presidential advisor, following the latest sanctions imposed on Ugandan officials by the US government. Lt Gen Elwelu is accused of violating human rights when he commanded the attack on the palace of the Omusinga Wa Rwenzururu in Kasese in 2016, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people. Others sanctioned include Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, her husband Moses Magogo, former ministers for Karamoja Affairs Gorreti Kitutu and Agness Nandutu, as well as Minister of State for Finance Amos Lugoloobi and their spouses.
