COCOA SECTOR: Farmers chase value in chocolate processing
Uganda’s cocoa crop may be gaining prominence as one of the future top exports, in fact with the country shipping out nearly 27,000 metric tonnes in 2019. Bundibugyo district is the leading producer besides others like Mukono, Mayuge, Buikwe, Kibaale, Hoima, Mpigi, Luwero and Masaka. For most cocoa farmers however, the road that leads from the seed to chocolate is not something they have even imagined speaking of value addition. In a 2019 Allied Market Research report, the global cocoa products market was valued at $24.5 billion, and is expected to grow to $30.2 billion by 2026.
