UGANDA’S CHRONIC STAFFING GAPS: Experts call for new investment in infrastructure, staffing

The Ministry of Health is taking steps to address Uganda’s chronic staffing gaps by expanding the human resource structure to accommodate more specialists, including one of the most overlooked: biomedical engineers. This revelation was made by the Assistant Commissioner for Biomedical and Electromechanical Engineering, Tadeo Byabagambi, during the launch of one of just five modular theatres in the country, a move aimed at improving surgical efficiency and equipment maintenance in public health facilities. In a country where many health facilities still struggle with poorly maintained equipment and weak infection prevention protocols, experts say the new investment in both infrastructure and human resources could mark a turning point in strengthening Uganda’s surgical and critical care systems.
