Soroti women turn to traditional attendants due to lack of antenatal care
In Olobai and Okimai villages in Soroti District, pregnant women attend antenatal care only two or three times during their term, far below the government-recommended eight visits. Many walk over six kilometres to reach the nearest health centre. Distance, poverty, and absent fathers have pushed expectant mothers into the hands of traditional birth attendants, despite the risks involved and a government ban. As Nobert Atukunda reports, local leaders are urging the government to bring health services closer to the people.
