Young people in Uganda’s capital are expressing hope that Zohran Mamdani’s leadership in New York could inspire a shift in attitude among their generation back home, where unemployment and political stagnation remain pressing challenges.
Some residents say Mamdani’s rise sends a powerful message to Ugandan youth. “I really hope that having people like Mamdani taking leadership in big cities like New York could change something among young people in Uganda,” said Muhammed Acram Juuko, a Kampala resident.
Mamdani, who was recently elected to public office in New York, is the son of renowned Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani. His win has drawn attention in Uganda, where many young people face limited opportunities and feel excluded from political decision-making.
