Uganda pushes for local cooking oil production
The latest research by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries indicates that 85 percent of cooking oil consumed in Uganda is imported. Most of the oil, according to the research, is of low standard. In 2021, the government set up a National Oil Seeds Project to support farmers in growing oil crops from which oil could be extracted. Efforts are being made to mobilize local government leaders to encourage farmers to grow oil crops. Some of the crops include, among others, soybeans, peanuts, cottonseed, sunflower seeds, and castor beans.
