Uganda’s Independence Monument: A symbol of freedom

In the heart of Kampala, along Speke Road, Uganda’s Independence Monument rises as a powerful symbol of freedom and resilience. Commissioned by the British colonial government ahead of Uganda’s first Independence Day on October 9, 1962, the monument depicts a woman lifting a child toward the sky — a striking representation of a nation breaking free from colonial bondage. Today, it is not only printed on all Bank of Uganda currency notes but also stands as a tribute to Uganda’s journey to self-rule and is one of the capital’s most iconic attractions, surrounded by gardens, vibrant street life, and a growing cultural scene. We are now joined by Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki, the Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority, to tell us more about this important art.
