Minister disowns army orders allowing further fishing
Fisheries State Minister Helen Adoa has disowned a decision by the Fisheries Protection Unit to allow fishermen to fish for silverfish, for two days, without consultation from the cabinet. Early this week, the Fisheries Protection Unit commander Lt Col Mercy Tukahirwa, allowed the fishermen to fish for two days, after they complained about a shortage of livelihood resources. However, the minister says the decision does not have cabinet clearance. Instead, the minister says the decision to ban fishing of silverfish, using small nets, seven months ago, was intended to prevent the fishing of premature Tilapia fish from Lake Victoria.
