Stakeholders suggest breeding lions to raise numbers
The Ministry of Tourism and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) express growing concern over the dwindling lion population in major game parks across the country. UWA officials estimate that there are only around 300 lions in the entire country, with Murchison Falls National Park being the only area retaining a substantial number. According to UWA, host communities are contributing to the decline by poaching lions and other wildlife, selling them to international smugglers. This alarming trend has sparked debates among stakeholders in the sector on whether the country should focus on breeding more lions or implement alternative conservation approaches to ensure their protection and long-term sustainability.
